The George Shirley Vocal Competition: African American Vocal Repertoire (GSVC) is an annual competition held at the University of Michigan. The competition offers singers and composers the opportunity to work with and receive feedback from world-renowned judges, including George Shirley.
Alícia, The House on Mango Street (world premiere) The Glimmerglass Festival
The House on Mango Street, a coming-of-age classic, has been acclaimed by critics, beloved by readers of all ages, taught in schools and universities alike, and translated around the world. Novelist Sandra Cisneros, winner of the PEN/Nabokov Award for Achievement in International Literature, has teamed up with Grammy-nominated composer Derek Bermel for an opera inspired by her classic book, which unfolds in a series of episodes seen through the eyes of a young girl. Through a series of interactions, which range from fascinating to funny to frightening, she comes to understand that storytelling is the medicine she can offer her community — and herself.
Ensemble, The Rake’s Progress
A debonair stranger, Nick Shadow, appears to Tom Rakewell and tempts him with the chance to reimagine his future. As Nick conjures a series of enticing adventures for Tom, Anne Trulove fights for Tom’s salvation. Written in Stravinsky’s neoclassical period, Stravinsky’s only full-length opera score sparkles with elegant vocal writing and lively dance rhythms.

The Music of Edvard Grieg
Soprano Sarah Rosales and Amanda Jones collaborate together on this recital of music by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. The evening will feature both voice and violin repertoire and will conclude with a reception provided by Daughters of Norway in Des Moines, Iowa. “The George Shirley Vocal Competition: African American Vocal Repertoire (GSVC) is an annual competition, held at The University of Michigan. The competition offers singers and composers the opportunity to work with and receive feedback from world-renowned judges, including George Shirley. More than $30,000 in prizes are awarded annually. The competition is open to singers and composers of all races and ethnicities, ages 14-32 for vocalists and 18-35 for composers.”
Hip Hop Orchestra Experience (featured singer, with Ensemble Mik Nawooj) Fairfield, IA
“Featuring members of Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra (SEISO) alongside San Francisco’s Ensemble Mik Nawooj, the Hip Hop Orchestra Experience is part concert, dance party, and club night featuring original music that samples from classical and hip-hop—all presented in an underground setting like the New York scene that birthed hip-hop. The music uniquely challenges the MCs and classical musicians pushing the boundaries of both hip-hop and concert music, creating something completely new. The program includes seminal works of Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven, deconstructed and reimagined with funky rhythms and rapid-fire rhymes.”

The Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition (Iowa District)
Sarah Rosales advanced in the Laffont Competition after being awarded a winner at the Iowa District in January of 2023.
